Trouble Shooting aka Trouble Booting

Man kicking PCLong long ago (actually 2 days back), there was this PC sitting there idle. It had multiboot, Windows XP and Fedora 6. On power-on, grub came up and told it will boot Fedora in 5 seconds, what could I do? I wanted Windows, so I pressed a key on the dumb keyboard (coz I couldn't find the 'any' key). I selected Other (that's what grub called Windows, funny ha...). So, I got into Windows, No problemo.

I wanted it to boot Windows by default. How am I gonna do that, I thought... Well, grub is kool, we can ask him to behave... I thought, but I was wrong...

Here is what happened... I didn't let grub boot Fedora right away. I never wanted GUI for this silly thing... So edited the grub prompt from boot menu itself and added an S (for single user mode, doesn't even need a password). And let it boot by pressing b.

Fedora came up into single user mode. Edited /boot/grub/grub.conf (I think the file said default=1, which means it must have booted Windows (aka Other)). Anyway, I checked or modified it to 1. Rebooted... Dumb grub again told it likes Fedora better (that I do too). So, I thought I needed to run grub-install. So, I again went to single user mode. Verified the conf file again. And then I made a mistake...

I ran grub-install /dev/sda1. I should have installed to /dev/sda, the MBR. I thought sda was never there, sda1 will be MBR.

I rebooted thinking that I had made grub understand me... but alas...

Grub again told it still liked Fedora and asked me to go to hell... I am not gonna let it go like that... Now I did go to Fedora X, but couldn't find GUI tool for Boot Configuration. So, this time I ran grub-install /dev/sda. But the worse was about to happen...

Grub came up and told it is gonna boot Other!!! Wow, great... after 5 seconds it booted other... what came up was grub prompt again...

When I installed grub to /dev/sda1, it overwrote the boot sector for Windows, which was in sda1. So, the Other in grub now pointed to the second grub which was installed in sda1. So now, Windows could not be booted... what do I do?

Needed to run fixboot from Windows Setup Disk. What I thought was fixboot will overwrite the MBR and I will need to install Fedora again, atleast the grub. That was ok, I needed my Windows back...

I got a Windows XP setup disk and put it in. Booted from the Disk, showed "Setup is inspecting blah blah blah..." and a blank screen showed and no Disk activity. It was another problem, I didn't want to tackle... if you want to know more, read this...... I just needed a working Setup of Windows ME or higher (Windows 98 wont work with NTFS partitions)... so I got one NT Setup Disk and tried booting... it booted and I got the menu... selected Recovery Console... got the prompt...

At last... gave fixboot.

Rebooted... I expected to have lost grub... but grub came up and told me, it will boot Other is 5 seconds... and after 5 seconds Windows logo came up... wow atlast... everything was fine again... :)

And thanks for listening to me, bye for now...
