Install Firefox Latest Official Release in Ubuntu

Wanna be using the most up-to-date version of Firefox. This post tells how to install the latest official release of Firefox...

Replace firefox-x.y.z with the corresponding version number, like firefox-3.6.1. If it says firefox-x.y only, that means use firefox-3.6 alone in that command.

1. Download

Download Firefox latest version setup from mozilla.com.
Let's say the filename is firefox-x.y.z.tar.bz2.
Save archive to /tmp.

2. Extract and Test

Extract the archive

cd /tmp; tar xvjf firefox-x.y.z.tar.bz2

The files will be extracted to directory named firefox.

Test Firefox

cd firefox
./firefox

Firefox will start...

3. Installing

Now install this version as the main firefox installation.

cd /usr/lib
sudo mv /tmp/firefox firefox-x.y
cd ../bin
sudo ln -sf ../lib/firefox-x.y/firefox firefox-x.y
sudo ln -sf firefox-x.y firefox

That will do the trick...

Another method is to use Ubuntuzilla. Check this thread...
